Product Details

Alt refers to an old-school, top-fermented style of brewing ale rather than a relatively modern bottom-fermented lager. Altbier is especially associated with the city of Düsseldorf. Alts are a bit difficult to explain to the uninitiated - kind of like a hoppy Oktoberfest? A very malty pale ale? You'll just have to try a glass of coppery-brown, rich, caramelly, and bitter ale to get the idea.

If you enjoyed Excelsior Altbier, you'll love this kit!

A wonderful German amber. I'll definitely make this again!

A German beer from my dad’s hometown.

My dad was born from Germany near Düsseldorf, and this beer is the beer this town drinks. I got to admit that I have no regrets with this one, and will definitely brew this again. Smooth and flavorful.

It's a good beer

The fact that this is the second time I made this beer should be enough to say I liked it. I can't vouch for it's proximity to style but it drinks easy. I added a pound of DME in the second batch and that made a big difference. It brought it into my preferred IBU/SG ratio. I'm sure I will make it again. It has what I call a good "beer" flavor. FWIW I used Lallermand BRY-97 yeast because I had it already but next time I will try Safale K-97 and see how that goes. That should be better for the style. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would.

Just like being in Düsseldorf!

We spent about a month in Düsseldorf in 2019 and loved the local beer. This kit tastes exactly like the alt bier served over there. Really easy to brew. Think I’ll make 10 gallons next time!
