Product Details

Haná Malt was used to produce the very first Pilsner beers back in the 1840s in Bohemia and became the progenitor for the vast majority of successful lager barley varieties to this day. Haná valley in Czech Moravia is where Haná barley originated.

Crisp Haná Malt brings that perfect bready, crisp continental flavor to all lager types, especially Pilsners and Helles beers. Haná malt, flavors of freshly baked bread, and subtle malty notes produce a clean, smooth wort. Its malting character is like a continental variety so treat it as such in the brewhouse with a step temperature program to solubilize the higher protein content. This will promote fantastic head retention. Haná is exceptionally pale in color.

History of Haná Malt

Haná’s early claim to fame was that it made up the mash of the first-ever golden-blond Pilsner lager, which was created in 1842 by Bavarian brewmaster Josef Groll at the Pivovar (Burgher Brewery) of Pilsen in Bohemia.

The subsequent global success of the pilsner beer style spawned the planting of Haná barley in many countries around the world. The original 19th-century Haná is internationally recognized as the classic genetic progenitor of modern top-quality brewing barleys.

Crisp Malt has taken just a few Haná seeds and grown them up over successive generations on prime Norfolk malting barley land, harvested them and slowly and carefully steeped, germinated and gently kilned them on their1870s floor maltings.

When Crisp Malt's very first harvest was released, it consisted of just 14 metric tons. This malt produced flavors of freshly baked bread with subtle malty notes producing a clean, smooth, sweet wort.

Very clean and moderately sweet.

Sweet and clean wort through my brewing system. Thirty min protein rest at 120f then 154f for 60 min produced a wort that has is easily one of the best beers I have ever micro-brewed. All grain or extract/grain brewing would work well for this barley.
