Homebrew Recipe Kits
Midwest Homebrewing Supplies offers a large selection of recipe kits. Our kits cover ale, lager, wheat and specialty hybrid styles. All ales come with a "top fermenting" yeast, while the lagers come with a "bottom fermenting" yeast. The ales ferment best at a temperature of between 60°F and 70°F, while lagers should be fermented between 45°F and 55°F. Lagers require a longer period of bottle conditioning, typically 6 weeks. This is ideally accomplished using a refrigerator using a thermostat control, but a cool basement floor during the winter months can also work. To determine if your basement is cool enough simply place a glass of water on your basement floor with a thermometer in it. If the thermometer reads between 45°F and 55°F, you’re ready to lager. Most of Midwest's Homebrew Recipe Kits come with multiple options in yeast. The standard kit comes with a dry yeast, but you also have the option of upgrading to a pitchable liquid yeast from Wyeast or White Labs.

In the case of a few select kits, such as some of our Lagers and Belgian Ales, we provide premium dry yeasts from companies like Fermentis. These yeasts costs more, and so the kits don't have the standard liquid yeast upgrade pricing. However, the higher base cost allows us to include these premium dry yeasts on select kits that are better suited to these styles of beer, so you get the yeast profile you'd expect for those types of beers and a higher quality beer as a result. These are truly great yeasts, and many of us here at Midwest use these yeasts instead of liquid strains because of their quality and cheaper cost.
Wyeast are pure strains of liquid beer yeast in self-contained foil packs. They require activation 6-24 hours before brewing. This is easily done by holding the yeast pack in your hand and hitting it with your other hand. This ruptures the yeast culture inside the pack. When you’re ready to add the yeast, simply cut the yeast pack open and add to your wort/beer. Yeast starters should be used with the Propogator style yeast packages, to build up a pitchable quantity of yeast. 1.75 oz. Propogator packs (000W) are available for an additional $3.00. Activators (000ACT) are available for an additional for $4.00. Activators may be pitched directly into cooled wort without being activated, but Midwest recommends activating the package at least 2 hours before pitching to reduce lag time. Activators may also be activated up to 24 hours in advance.
Each vial of White Labs Pitchable Yeast contains enough high quality liquid brewers yeast to pitch directly into 5 gallons of wort with no starter necessary. Each vial represents a concentrated 1 to 2 Liter starter of yeast (70 to 140 billion cells). The quantity included more cells equals shorter lag times and cleaner (tastier) brews. All White Labs Yeast vials (000WL) are available for an additional $5.00.
All homebrewing recipe kits from Midwest include: Briess malt extract (unless otherwise noted), specialty grains, imported and domestic hops, fresh yeast, priming sugar, grain bag and complete easy to follow instructions. They are designed to brew 5 gallon batches.
